We used math terms like; symmetrical, diameter, and radius to describe our design. Then the students wrote about why they chose certain colors for their design.

3rd Grade Line Design Landscape
First we reviewed different kinds of lines and the different direction they can travel. Then I projected a photograph of a landscape up on the white board and we reviewed contour line by drawing the outline around the tree, mountains and lake with marker. I turned off the projector and the contour landscape was the only thing on the board.
The students started their drawing by creating their horizontal line and then the shapes within their landscape. Inside each shape the chose a line and direction then repeated it to fill the shape. When they were finished they went over their pencil lines with a Sharpie to create a black and white drawing. They then used crayon to color in the sky.
3rd Grade Scratch Art VanGogh
First we learned about Vincent VanGogh; birth 1853. death 1890, and figure out how old he would be today. Then we use google maps to look up Groot-Zundert, Holland where he was born.
Next we watch a YouTube video with Starry Night lyrics by Don McLean and then critique VanGogh's Starry Night brfore creating our own.

Fifth Grade Art Mats
The fifth graders used radial design to create their art mats. They used complimentary colors to decorate the letters in their name and then used any colors to color in their radial design background.
Fourth Grade Art Mats
We reviewed one-point perspective by creating our initials in a one point design. We also reviewed warm and cool color groups.
Third Grade Art Mats
I used Henri Matisse, "Purple Robe and Anemones" to show the students the line designs in the backgound. We reviewed different kinds of lines and I drew them on the white board. Then we reviewed the three directions of lines and I drew each kind of line in the three directions.

Back to School 2012-2013
Welcome back! I am looking forward to another good year. I hope to post and blog more this year. Our school is under construction again this year and our art room is not done yet, so I travel from room to room. I have a table in a storage room where I set up my laptop and use as my desk. I will tell you how I stay organized in a small space and what materials I have to use. I will take some pictures of my area and student works. This will help me document the curriculum I am creating for 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.
Here is the table with my laptop.
Here are my two drying racks the one on the left rolls with me. I have a tag board portfolio for each class it holds their art projects, quizzes, and drawing paper. I fill each portfolio with what the need to work on for the art class.

In the background to the left is my cutting board, middle is shelving for construction paper or student art work, and the metal cabinet holds a few supplies, The students each have their own art box in their rooms and get it out during art time. We will be doing projects using markers, colored pencils, crayons and watercolors.

In the morning I have four classroom portfolios, tag board to cover their desks to keep their desks marker free, and any project examples to show. We are very lucky because all the new classrooms have a Bright Links projector and a white board. Our network is in a cloud so I can log in using the teachers computer that is set up with Bright Links and I can project websites, artist prints, anything I find on the Internet or the smart notebook files I create. IT IS AWESOME!
